The  Weeks Schedule

 

Monday Day 1: Introduction to Horses

  • Pick up at 9.30 a.m. from  Blackheath Railway Station

  • On the way down a short stop in a ancient rainforest

  • Meet and greet introduction to staff, room allocation and orientation 

  • Introduction to horses starts with basic grooming and saddling up lesson and definitely hands on

  • Lunch break

Afternoon  

  • Everyone wants to get riding asap so we finish the lesson followed by a ride  up to the scenic escarpment to see the majestic cliffs.

  • After the first taste of horsemanship , it time to unsaddle the horses, then the farrier will explain how to check your horses feet.

  • A whip cracking lesson  after smoko round the campfire

  • Dinner and relax

 

Tuesday Day 2: Farm Equipment, Horses and Bikes

  • Farm wakeup for livestock, breakfast time for  the pigs, goats, sheep, alpacas & chooks

  • Muster work and bring in horses in from night paddock

  • Feed out to horses, and learn about horses nutrition, working with feeding horses safely

  • Morning smoko

  • Lesson on how to work around and catch horses.

  • Session with grooming the horses

  • Practical  tacking up lesson on the horses equipment

  • Putting it altogether – a riding lesson getting you comfortable with trotting

  • Lunch break

Afternoon  

  • Safety session on farm machinery

  • How to work around people using tractors, chainsaws

  • Skills for agricultural machinery & tools

  • Tools and equipment for fencing

  • How to help repair fences and yards

 

Wednesday Day 3:   Working with Sheep

  • Farm startup for all the animals, muster horses and feedout. 

  • Tack up your horse,  morning smoko, then more lessons on rural skills

  • Working with Sheep  -demonstrations on how to work sheep on horses, with dogs, on bikes.

  • How to move a mob and get them into yards.

  • How to catch a sheep

  • Helping with care such as drenching, marking, crutching

  • Terms used in a shearing shed

  • How to care for orphan lambs

  • Practise with small mob of sheep in yards

  • Lunch break

Afternoon

  • Pastures and how to help out properties.

  • Field equipment and how to use it,   

  • Help out with fencing or yard building

  • Bush survival and local bush tucker

 

Thursday Day 4: Working with Cattle    

  • Cattle and their temperaments.

  • Working safely with cattle especially bulls, cows with calves

  • Working with Cattle demonstrations on how to work  cattle on horses, with dogs, on bikes.

  • How to move a  herd and get them into yards. How to draft cattle, separate and load

  • How to catch a  calf, how to care for orphan calves

  • Helping with care such as drenching, marking,  tagging

  • Terms used on a cattle property

 

Afternoon

  • Practise with  herd of cattle and muster into yards

 

 

Friday  Day 5: Putting it Together

  • A lesson on maintaining saddlery

  • Catch and saddle the horses

  • Getting ready for the horse muster

  • Picnic lunch at the creek

  • Bring in the horses with a trot and a canter

  • Return to Katoomba  around 6.00 p.m.

 

In the winter evenings you can sit around the campfire with marshmallows  

Weather permitting you can enjoy BBQ or camp oven cooked meals which is prepared by the group.
