The  Weeks Programme                            How much fun can you handle?               

You can now experience the outback adventure  that everyone dreams about as a  jackaroo or jillaroo at the  Megalong Jackaroo School in the heart of the Blue Mountains.

If you’re looking for a real Australian outback experience, then  this is the adventure for you.

 

What does the course cover?

  • Horse grooming and saddling up

  • Horsemanship and  riding technique

  • Sheep  care  & mustering

  • Horse shoeing

  • Whip cracking and spinning the billy

  • Mustering on horseback

  • Horse breaking skills.

  • Building  campfires & cooking dampers

  • Fencing techniques

  • Cattle mustering

  • Cattle breeds, cows, bulls and  calves  

  • Teaching tricks to horses

  

Monday Day 1: Introduction to Horses

o  Pick up at 9.30 a.m. from Blackheath Railway Station

o  On the way down a short stop in an ancient rainforest

o  Meet and greet introduction to staff,  

o  Room allocation and orientation

o  Introduction to horses starts with basic grooming and saddling up lesson and definitely hands on

o  Learning the Aussie Slang

o  A lesson on maintaining saddlery

o  Lunch break

Afternoon  

o  Everyone wants to get riding asap so we finish the lesson followed by a ride  up to the scenic escarpment to see the majestic cliffs.

o  After the first taste of horsemanship it's time to unsaddle the horses, then the farrier will explain how to check your horses feet.

o  Afternoon farm duties, putting out the feeds, and livestock into the paddocks

o  A whip cracking lesson  after smoko round the campfire

 

Tuesday Day 2: Farm Equipment, Horses and Bikes

o  Farm wakeup for livestock, breakfast time for  the   pigs, goats, sheep, alpacas & chooks

o  Muster work and bring in horses in from night paddock

o  Feed out to horses, and learn about horses nutrition, working with feeding horses safely

o  Morning smoko (aussie term for coffee break)  

o  Lesson on how to work around and catch horses.

o  Session with grooming the horses

o  Practical  tacking up lesson on the horses equipment

o  Putting it altogether – a riding lesson getting you comfortable with trotting

o  Lunch break

Afternoon  

o   Safety session on farm machinery How to work around people using tractors, chainsaws

o   Skills for agricultural machinery & tools

o   Afternoon farm duties, putting out the feeds, and livestock into the paddocks

o   Bush survival and local bush tucker

 

Wednesday Day 3:   Working with Sheep

o  Farm startup for all the animals, muster horses and feedout. 

o  Tack up your horse, morning smoko, then more lessons on rural skills

o  Working with Sheep -demonstrations on how to work sheep on horses, on ATV bikes

o  How to move a mob and get them into yards.

o  Helping with care such as drenching, marking, crutching

o  Terms used in a shearing shed

o  How to catch a sheep, and how to care for orphan lambs

o  Practise with small mob of sheep in yards

o  Lunch break

Afternoon

o Tools and equipment for fencing, Field equipment and how to use it,   

o How to help repair fences and yards

o Checking out the pastures and how to help out with field work,

o Afternoon farm duties, putting out the feeds, and livestock into the paddocks

o Smoko round the campfire

 

Thursday Day 4: Working with Cattle    

o Farm startup for all the animals, muster horses and feedout. 

o Tack up your horse,  morning smoko, then more lessons on rural skills

o Cattle and their   temperaments. Terms used on a cattle property

o Working safely with cattle especially bulls, cows with calves

o Working with Cattle demo on how to work  cattle on horses, with dogs, on bikes.

o How to move a  herd and get them into yards. How to draft cattle, separate and load

o How to catch a calf and care for orphan calves

o Helping with care such as drenching, marking,  tagging

o Lunch break

Afternoon

o   Practise with  herd of cattle and muster into yards

o   How to muster on horseback and with bikes.

o   Afternoon farm duties, putting out the feeds, and livestock into the paddocks

o   Smoko round the campfire

 

Friday  Day 5: Putting it Together

o   Farm startup for all the animals, muster horses and feedout. 

o  Tack up your horse,  morning  break, then more lessons on rural skills

o  Mustering lesson in arena 

o  Whip cracking lesson

o  Ride over to Shanendoah Ranch for the weekly muster

o  Muster the horses from the river paddocks

o  Muster the sheep and check for lambs

o  Muster the cattle and check for calves, drenching or other weekly task.

o  Picnic lunch at the Cox's river

Afternoon

o  Drafting and sorting the horses

o  Bring in the horses to the homestead with a trot and a canter

o  Afternoon farm duties, putting out the feeds, and livestock into the paddocks
